Beijing (Peking/Pekin) is the capital of the People's Republic of China and is one of the four municipalities of the country, which are equivalent to provinces in China's administrative structure. Beijing is also one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. It was the seat of the Ming and Qing Dynasty Emperors until the formation of a republic in 1911. It is rich in historical sites and important government institutions.


Beijing is China’s second-largest city, after Shanghai, with a population of more than 18 million. It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city, while also serving as the focal point of a large number of international flights to China.  The city is commonly referred to as the political, educational and cultural heart of the People's Republic of China.
